northern horizons: B-Roll - part 1 (Chapters 1 - 13.)

Halival and Askival, the Rum Cuillin, chapter 11: Island Life

The format of Northern Horizons was inspired in part, by the series of books by Ken Wilson and Richard Gilbert including The Big Walks as well as the climbing classics also compiled by Ken Wilson which included Hard Rock. For each of those books many thousands of images were submitted by talented photographers - more than 10,000 for Wild Walks alone which resulted in a shortlist of 2,000, and a final selection of 270. The essays in each title were also written by multiple authors, resulting in a collection of books which are classics in their genre.

The Merrick from Little Spear, chapter 4: A River of Mists

Setting out to do the same, alone, was perhaps a little over ambitious, and in every chapter of Northern Horizons, there are gaps which it simply wasn’t possible to fill - images which were impossible to capture. But then you could spend a lifetime photographing such places, running new lines and exploring the hidden places, and still not be satisfied with the results.

Richard Bolton on Grasmoor, chapter 1: Fat Man’s Agony

And yet there were still a huge number of images that were not used in the final edit, many of which captured at least something of the essence of the running and the places described in Northern Horizons.

A snowy owl above the Cairngorm plateau, chapter 9: Running Wild

From the Lakeland fells to the Outer Hebrides and the far north of Scotland, I’ve added a selection here from chapters 1 to 13, with more to follow from chapters 14 to 26. As with those in the book, the vast majority were taken while running, or in isolated cases while kayaking, and therefore subject to the limitations of time, weather and weight - a single 24-70mm F1:2.8 lens being used throughout.
