HARTSOP HOP FELL RACE
In partnership with
The second edition of THE Hartsop Hop : a deceptively tough AM, which might become an AL if your lines are suboptimal
Starting from the sheep pens above Hartsop (as for Leg 2 of the HBMR), there is an immediate route choice to be made – Rest Dodd is the first checkpoint, how you get there is up to you!
North-east of Rampsgill Head, on the col beneath High Raise, CP2 is the cut-off and must be reached within 70 minutes. If you are directed by the marshals to retire, please return to the start via the path which passes to the north of The Knott and down by Hayeswater.
A fast descent to Kidsty Howes follows - a poor line through the outcrops here might cost you a position or three - with a steep drop to Haweswater and a short climb to The Rigg, CP3. A short stretch on the stony path above Haweswater gives a chance to recover before the mostly runnable climb up Nan Bield Pass.
Lingmell End, CP4, is where you don’t want to end up on the Kentmere Horseshoe and the way back is all against you, but you’ll forget about that soon enough approaching the final checkpoint (CP5) on Gray Crag.
The last descent will test tired legs - the direct line is very steep and requires care, some will prefer to follow the path which skirts around to the north of the outcrops at 500m. A final flourish on the track brings you back to the sheep pens and the finish.

NORTHERN HORIZONS
Launched at the Fort William Mountain Festival, 14 Feb 2025, and published by Scottish Mountaineering Press, Northern Horizons features a collection of essays and challenging fell and hill running routes across Scotland and Northern England.
In review:
"Like the quieter corners of the rugged mountains of Scotland and Cumbria it vividly describes, this book is to be relished. Speaking not with the commodifying sensationalism of our times, nor the relentless stopwatch of performance, Northern Horizons is an immersion in the ephemeral patterns and shifts of mountain time. Woven with human and geologic history, its celebration of the primal act of moving amongst mountain landscapes is second only to the enduring grandeur of these places.”
